Aloe vera is an ancient plant, a short stemmed evergreen succulent that has been in use in a variety of medical, culinary and just plain decorative use for thousands of years. Many (including me) consider it essential to have aloe vera in their kitchens, for quick application in case of a burn. It is easy to grow as long as you remember that it must have good drainage and never be over-watered. It can tolerate low light. The wonderful thing about aloe is that it reproduces with ease and in time any well-cared for aloe will give birth to "pups" -- small off shoots which can be removed to make new plants. You will receive one plant comparable to that shown in a 3" nursery pot with good, nutritious, proper soil for succulents. Keep in the pot until it cries to be "potted up." Then transfer to a slightly larger, and this time, terra cotta clay pot, putting a few pebbles in the bottom for drainage. Aloe grows best, and reproduces best, when it is slightly pot bound. This is a healthy, thriving, "juicy" plant.
